It’s not often that two whole bands collaborate, never mind two bands as well established as Franz Ferdinand and Sparks, but the match-up of the two is one that, on paper, looks rather fantastic. Franz Ferdinand and Sparks have had a mutual admiration from the very start – one of the first songs that Franz Ferdinand ever tried to play as a band was Sparks’ track ‘Achoo’, which incidentally they have been playing on their joint tour. But does this theoretically very good collaboration work?
Gorillaz are a ‘virtual band’ created by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Tank Girl artist Jamie Hewlett, whose debut album, featuring hit singles like ‘19/2000’ and ‘Clint Eastwood’ was released back in 2001. The album was incredibly successful, blending hip-hop and rock, along with a slew of other influences, in a very original way. When the time came for a successor to the album, we were given ‘Demon Days’, which was released 10 years ago this year.

Everything Everything has always been one of the more unique bands on the UK alternative scene, with a sound that defies description, comparison or classification. Their second album, ‘Arc’, while perhaps not as immediately gripping as their debut, ‘Man Alive’, showed a definite improvement in their sonic depth, most present on fantastic tracks like ‘Duet’ and ‘The Peaks’. I’m Neil MacQuarrie, a student at the University of Warwick in the UK and Head of Music at RaW 1251AM, the university’s student radio station. I present a show on this station called Indiecisive and this blog will be running in a very similar vein, looking at alternative music through the years.
